My work provides strategies to engineer a 3D microenvironment using synthetic hydrogels to promote the development of differentiated muscle tissue from skeletal muscle progenitor cells to form contractile units. Hydrogel scaffolds encapsulating C2C12 mouse skeletal muscle cells have been engineered as in vitro constructs towards regenerative medicine therapies for the enhancement or inducement of functional skeletal muscle formation.

I had a number of projects but the 3 main ones where:

1) Developed a new characterization method for glucose sensor electrodes based on impedance spectroscopy.

2) Developed a novel in-vitro microfluidics testing platform for the glucose sensors.

3) Solved critical sensor electrode fabrication issues across multiple product lines to keep pending international product launch deadlines within reach.

They are trying to expand and actively looking for interns and full-time hires. It is a very interdisciplinary environement where you do not need to have prior experience with diabetes. I had none. They are interested in whether your skill sets can solve their problems. Good people to work with too.

The AAAS Mass Media Fellows program selects about 10 students each summer and places them in newsrooms across the country to work as science journalists. I was placed at The Oregonian, a daily newspaper, and reported on science, environment, and health topics. Other Mass Media Fellows were placed at outlets like NPR, The LA Times, and Scientific American. Over the summer, I accrued a large library of clips, including several from page A1 of the newspaper. I was sponsored by IEEE-USA, and other fellows were sponsored by other major STEM societies.

I was working on developing an animal model that can be used as a test bed for early stage drug testing. We used RNAi silencing method using Lipid nanoparticle vehicles to knockdown an essential enzyme that can impair the functions of p450 family of enzymes involved in metabolism of drugs in the liver. We validated the kockdown of the target enzyme as well as the functional reduction in activity of the target and p450 family of enzymes by testing known drugs in liver microsomes isolated from these treated animals. Preliminary in vivo studies testing the ability of these models to slow down the metabolism of select few drugs were initiated towards the end of the internship.
